Diabetes and Oral Health

Dental health is as important as keeping our skin fair and glowing. It is something that adds confidence and self-esteem when interacting with other people. Sometimes, dental problems can be as stressing as having a serious disease therefore it is very important to pay attention to our teeth.

When you have diabetes, risks are higher to get dental problems because high sugar levels also affect the mouth and gums. Blood is flowing all over the body including the mouth. Therefore, infection might also happen if the blood is carrying high doses of sugar up to the gums. In addition, it can lead to tooth loss.

Possible causes of dental problems with diabetes include high sugar content in the saliva which can attract plaque formation in your teeth leading to infection. Moreover, if you are used to eating sweets, risks are also high in developing tooth decay, ulcers and other diseases of the mouth. Here are a few effects of diabetes on your dental status.

  • Dry and burning mouth: These symptoms might cause cracked lips, rough tongue and mouth sores. The best thing to do is maintain a high liquid diet to refresh and keep your mouth hydrated and moist.
  • Periodontitis and gingivitis: These conditions can cause bad breath because of swollen and bleeding gums which sometimes contains pus. It can also loosen your tooth or change the fit of your dentures.
  • Thrush: These are sore red or white spots on your tongue and gums.

Here are a few tips on how you can take extra care on your dental health.

  • Religiously brush and clean your teeth. Flossing is also advisable.
  • If you have dentures, make time to remove it daily then give it a clean. It is as precious as your natural teeth. Also, fix dentures that are no longer fitting well.
  • Keep your mouth moist by using rinsing solutions which are sugarless.
  • Avoid cigarettes and alcohol because these items also leave substances which are unhealthy for your teeth.
  • Maintain a diet which is high in fiber and non-starchy.
  • Maintain low blood sugar levels.
  • Visit your dentist on a regular basis.
