Is eating high levels of sugar the main cause of acanthosis nigricans?

The answer is no, but it is a contributing factor. Acanthosis nigricans is a condition where skin folds develop dark spots or brown and black discoloration. It involves different body parts like the back of the neck, armpit, groin, navel and forehead. It has direct relationship with diabetes, obesity and insulin resistance. So when one person is engaged to sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy diet, he has high chances of getting acanthosis nigricans that may lead to severe skin complications. He should have regular checks of blood glucose, lipid and liver function as an extra precaution.
